Both my grandfather and dad were mezcaleros in their day, my family says I inherited their mezcal gene. I now live in Los Angeles and head operations at Guelaguetza Restaurant, our family restaurant where we are dedicated to the advocacy of Oaxaca’s culture in Los Angeles through its art, music and most importantly, food and drinks.
Viva Mezcal is a documentary that deals with the politics and people surrounding the world of mezcal. Seen through the eyes of biologists, agronomists, researchers, maestros mezcaleros, distributors, bartenders and experts on the subject, they all give a perspective of the current situation of this drink and a possible future.

From one of my favorite restaurants in Oaxaca- El Origen, comes Chef Rodolfo Castellanos to cook up Oaxacan antojitos that will be shared with free flowing mezcal all night long provided by some of the hottest mezcal brands out here in LA at the moment. We will also be joined by a couple of brand owners, ambassadors and of course, guest Mixologists

There are a limited amount of tickets, so I encourage everyone to get their tickets early!

I encourage you all to watch this fragment of the new(ish) full length mezcal documentary by Pedro Jimenez Gurria. It is a very interesting view on mezcal as seen through the eyes of biologists, agronomists, researchers, maestros mezcaleros, distributors, bartenders and other mezcal experts.

You can catch the full-lenght version this coming May 16th at my restaurant in conjunction with HMFF at 8pm.

More details to follow on that event, but for now, I leave you with this fragment focusing on the NOM 186 controversy. Enjoy!

Our family has never seen our restaurant as just a simple place to eat, but as a place from where we can share our Oaxacan culture as a whole with all of Los Angeles. We see the restaurant as our Guelaguetza to LA. The meaning of our name, reciprocity, defines who we are. And with the help of our Oaxacan brother and sister of Colectivo LaPiztola we hope to achieve just that with this exciting upcoming project.
Guelaguetza has commissioned Oaxaca-based street Artists Rosario Martinez and Roberto Vega of Colectivo LaPiztola to create a mural across our building down Olympic blvd. This project will begin on March 6th through March 13th and has already gained the support of many personal friends from the art community.
We would like to invite all of those reading this, to please visit our restaurant during the time of this installation, meet these wonderful artists, and allow us to share a little bit of our Oaxaca with you.

More on Colectivo LaPiztola
Born out of the 2006 social movement in Oaxaca, LaPiztola art collective has since risen in popularity and have quickly become one the most coveted artists in the Oaxacan street art scene. Their name, a play of words combining the Spanish words “lapiz” for pencil and “pistola” for pistol, demonstrates their guerilla approach to spreading their work. They have mastered the techniques of blending brightly colored screen patterns with masterful monochromatic stencils. La Piztola has exhibited in Million Fishes in San Francisco, Concreto 2 in Mexico City, and a one of a kind show at University of Michigan. The Guelaguetza mural across Olympic Blvd will be their first Los Angeles appearance.

Months ago, my brother and I were walking down Olympic blvd.,...

Months ago, my brother and I were walking down Olympic blvd., and as we saw our restaurant from afar, we realized something…He and I have never seen our restaurant as just a simple eating-place, but as a place from where we can share our Oaxacan culture as a whole with all of Los Angeles. We see it as our Guelaguetza to LA. The meaning of our name, reciprocity, defines who we are. And with the help of our Oaxacan brother and sister of Colectivo LaPiztola we hope to achieve just that with an exciting upcoming project of ours.

I had my first sip at La Zandunga in Oaxaca and was immediately hooked (though when in Oaxaca, you may just want to call it out as a “San Andres”) Last week, Tasting Table sent out their weekly national newsletter featuring their three selections – San Andres, San Baltazar and San Juan Del Rio. I am biased to their San Andres, I love the hints of fennel and its long fruity finish. You will never go wrong with purchasing any of these three. A definite must-have in anybody’s liquor cabinet!

Favorite quote from the article:

A couple of years ago some colleagues and I founded an association called The Taste of Mexico Assocication with the mission to promote and enhance Mexican’s rich history and tradition of it’s food. I am sure some of you attended our first food event at Vibiana’s in 2010. Well, this year we are taking over Vibiana’s cathedral once again to bring you an even bigger and better event.

We’ve invited a few more friends to join us this time around. Besides the four founding members (La Casita Mexicana, Frida’s, La Monarca Bakery and Guelaguetza) we’ve handpicked some of our LA Mexican favorites, among them: Cacao Mexicatessen, Loteria Grill, Playa, Guisados, Yucca’s, Nevera and LA’s favorite Mexican Pastry chef Rene Baez (Roosevelt).

On the drink side, we will have heartthrobs Pablo Moix and Steve Livigni shakin’ up mezcal cocktails, a beer garden sponsored by non-other than the OG Victoria Beer (Micheladas included people!), Maestro Dobel and Casa Dragones Tequila will also be in the house providing all of us with tequila shots tastings.

I look forward to seeing all of you there! I promise it will be a good time (I mean, really anytime you have mezcal, tequila and more that two Mexicans involved, you’re bound to have a good time)
